Six at 6pm with… Nick Hempleman founder of The Sussex Produce Company
Hello Nick from The Sussex Produce Company! You founded The Sussex Produce Company in 2007 and now have two shops in Sussex and a café in Steyning. The Sussex Produce Company has won numerous awards and hosted some impressive food personalties including culinary legends Mary Berry and Pru Leith.
You’re a huge proponent of buying produce from local farmers and supporting the local economy as well as promoting an ethos of eating seasonally. We love what you do and what you stand for.
Ok. Let’s get started!
1. Your Sussex food or drink hero and what they make that makes you go 😋?
Jeremy Ashpool from the wonderful Jeremy’s at Borde Hill. Gave me my first job when he ran the Crabtree at Lower Beeding. True champion of proper food and proper cooking.
2. Favourite place to go for coffee in Sussex?
I really like the Perch in Lancing – something lovely about looking out over the sea…
3. Favourite Sussex pub for a Sunday roast?
The Griffin in Fletching. Real fires, real ale and someone tinkling the ivories on their upright piano.
4. Favourite Sussex tipple?
Harvey’s Best – classic, expertly made and always utterly consistent. An underrated trait in an artisan product.
5. Favourite Sussex dish or Sussex-inspired recipe?
Sussex Smokie. The simple combination of smoked fish and a thick cheese sauce is a match made in heaven.
6. Banoffee Pie or Sussex Pond Pudding?
Tough one. One of my early cheffing jobs was working with some guys from the Hungry Monk who invented Banoffee Pie but Sussex Pond pudding is delicious, especially if made with unwaxed Sicilian lemons like we’re selling at the moment. Can I have a small piece of each?!
Of course you can have a slice of each, rude not to, really!
Thank you so much, Nick. It’s been a pleasure.
The Sussex Produce Company is the perfect place to discover loads of gorgeous Sussex produce and to grab a bite to eat too. A truly authentic local gem.
